What Is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic skin resurfacing treatment that delicately polishes off the top layer of your skin with the help of a diamond-tipped wand. The process exposes a fresh layer of skin, which is smooth, soft and radiant.
Benefits of microdermabrasion
The primary benefit of microdermabrasion is that your fresher younger skin becomes the outer layer, which minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and unearths a fresh face. Microdermabrasion helps to diminishing and even getting rid of acne, fine lines, enlarged pores, blackheads, age spots, hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone), scars, stretch marks, wrinkles and dull skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. If you complete a treatment protocol of three to five sessions, you’ll see an amazing difference.
Microdermabrasion versus chemical peels
Microdermabrasion has virtually no risks and no side effects. Unlike with chemical peels, your body’s reaction to a microdermabrasion treatment is purely physical and only occurs at the surface of your skin. Painless and quick, microdermabrasion sessions usually last fewer than 30 minutes, and require no downtime.
Microdermabrasion is effective on mild acne. For intense acne difficulties, your skin may be too easily irritated by microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is least effective on severe skin imperfections, as it cannot reach deeper layers of skin.
For these reasons, often we recommend to our clients laser facials instead of, or in conjunction with, microdermabrasion treatments. While microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped wand and suction to polish away dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin, laser facials use a more sophisticated technology, laser light, to instantly vaporize damaged cells lying deeper in your skin. Laser facials do this without harming the surrounding tissue or the top skin layer.
In the next chapter, we’ll discuss laser facials.
